Submissions from writers  

We welcome your birth stories, midwife/doula stories, poetry, artwork, photography, editorials, book reviews, etc. We welcome submissions on birth in diverse settings (home, birth center, hospital). We are interested in hearing about your experiences with and thoughts about midwives, doulas, birth plans, vbacs, waterbirth, birth chairs, hypnosis, acupuncture, lotus birth, alternative childbirth preparation classes, etc. We are also very interested in activist articles and interviews with childbirth reformers. Topics of interest include: the cesarean section epidemic, VBAC bans, breastfeeding, homebirth legislative issues, patient rights, principles of informed consent and refusal, etc.

 Call for Submissions for Volume 2

Please include a brief biographical sketch, your name, address, phone number, and email address on the first page of your manuscript as well as your name and the page number on subsequent pages. You may submit material electronically to susan@alternativebirth.org .

Photographers’ Guidelines

We are interested in photos of pregnant women, particularly labor and birth photos of women in active labor/birth positions, photos of doulas/midwives at work, prenatal yoga, photos of women participating in birth rallies/protests, breastfeeding, etc. birth center birth Permission must be granted by the mother appearing in the photo for its inclusion in the book or on the website. You may submit photos for consideration without submitting model releases, but a release will have to be signed prior to the book's publication. A $1,000.00 prize will be awarded for the best overall photograph chosen for publication in the first volume of Alternative Birth. The winner will be announced and the photo posted on the website when we announce the close of submissions for volume 1. You may send us photocopies, reprints, digital photos, or low-resolution scans for submission, but we will request a high resolution image if your photo is chosen for publication. You may also submit photos by uploading them to the new Alternative Birth group on Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/groups/alternativebirth/ This is an easy way to get rapid feedback on your photos. If you want to submit photo CDs, mail them to the address at the bottom of this page.

Feel free to submit a single photo or dozens. Photographers who submit many images which are chosen for publication will be featured in the contributor's section with a full-page profile including thumbnails of all of their photos (which will be scattered throughout the book), a bio., information about their studio or photography business, etc. We also plan to put a small number of birth photographers under paid contract (email us for more details).

Tips for Photographers

  1. Don’t cut off mom’s head!!!! Pregnant belly shots and crowning perineum shots are a dime a dozen. The most beautiful photos are those which show the entire woman (including her face)!

Submissions from artists

Please submit artwork that is consistent with the message of Alternative Birth. Artwork which features pregnancy / birth / breastfeeding / sacred feminine / holistic themes will be considered. We will also accept decorative details for pages. We are not interested in “mainstream cute”.

You may send us photocopies, reprints, digital photos, or low-resolution scans for submission. If your artwork is accepted for publication we will request an 8.75" high resolution, >300ppi TIFF or JPEG.
